LAKE WALES - William "Doc" Charette, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Sunday, March 18, 2012 due to complications of surgery.
He was born and raised in Ludington, Michigan. Master Chief Charette served at the Naval Hospital in Charleston, SC; FMF, 1st Marine Division, Korea, USS Quillback (SS424), USS Triton (SSN586), Fleet Ballistic Missile Training Center, Charleston, SC, USS Dan-iel Webster (SSBN626), Naval Hospital, Orlando, FL, USS Simon Bolivar (SSBN646), and at the Recruit Dispensary, Orlando, FL; where he retired from the Navy on April 1, 1977. While serving as a Navy Corpsman with the Marines in Korea in March of 1953, he was written up for the Congressional Medal of Honor. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on January 12, 1954. In May of 1958, while on board the USS Canberra (CAG2), he made the final selection on the World War II Unknown Soldier, now buried in Arlington National Cemetery. On April 30, 1999, the Charette Health Care Center in Portsmouth, VA was dedicated in his honor. It is recognized as the flagship hospital for the East Coast. He is a member of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, the Korean War Veterans Association, William R. Charette Chapter 158, Elks Lodge 1974, V.F.W. Lodge in Lake Wales, FL, USS Sea Peachers Association, Fleet Reserve Association in Charleston, SC, Florida Chief Petty Officer Association and many other charitable organizations.
He is preceded in death by his son, William "Billy" Charette. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Louise Fraiser Charette; children, Margaret A. Henderson, Kathryn M. Donovan, Laura L. Bennett and Michael R. Charette; beloved sister, Margaret "Peggy" Ezdebski; brothers-in-law, Bill and Stewart Fraiser; and five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be held 1:30pm Thursday, March 22, 2012 at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. For those who wish, donations may be made to The Medal of Honor Museum at Patriots Point (Post Office Box 309, Mount Pleasant, SC 19465). Condolences may be sent to the family at

Evans, Eugene E. "Gene" NAPLES, Fla. Eugene E. "Gene" Evans, 77, a seasonal resident of Naples, Fla. and resident of Troy and Cossayuna Lake, N.Y., entered into eternal life on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 after a long illness. Born in Cornwall, N.Y., he was the son of the late Edward and Frances Wood Evans and the beloved husband of the late Virginia Evans. Mr. Evans was a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy, U.S. Navy Corpsman School and licensed as a NY State Nursing Home administrator. A veteran of the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War, Eugene served with the 1st and 3rd Marine Divisions, Fleet Marine Force; Naval Hospitals Newport, R.I., Yokosuka, Japan and Portsmouth, N.H. as well as the USS Yosemite (AD19), USS Hammerberg (DE1015), and USS Cascade (AD16). He finished his Naval career at Naval Station Brooklyn. He was retired from the U.S. Navy in 1970 as a senior chief hospital corpsman. Upon retirement from the Navy, he became the administrator for the Eden Park Nursing Home of Troy before retiring again in 1985. Gene loved to golf, travel, and enjoyed his trips to Hawaii, Europe and Spain. He especially loved the time spent with family and friends at his summer residence at Cossayuna Lake. He was a member of the Cossayuna Volunteer Fire Department, NYS Fire Police Association, American Legion, VFW and Fleet Reserve Association. He was also past president of the Elks Lodge, Brunswick, N.Y., where he was also a member of their bowling league. Gene is survived by his children, Raymond (Suzanne) Evans, Donna (Nick) Rocchio, Nancy Stahlecker, William Evans, Mona Jean (Shawn) Bergeron, the late Arthur Evans, Mark (Brenda) Paul, David (Cathy) Paul, Bruce (Nancy) Paul, Robert (Judi) Paul, Pamela (Jeffrey) McCumber and Edward Van Leuvan. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in Cossayuna, N.Y. at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Eugene's memory may be made to the Cossayuna Volunteer Fire Department, 231 Bunker Hill Road, Cossayuna, NY 12823-1704. Arrangements by the Wm. Candlen, James J. Jr. EAST GREENBUSH James J. Candlen Jr., 76, of East Greenbush, died suddenly at his home on Monday, December 22, 2008. Born in Albany, he was a member of the Albany Police Dept. and retired as senior detective in 1997 after 41 years of service. During his tenure, he was a proud member of the Night Squad. After his retiring, he continued to serve as executive security at Albany Police Headquarters. He was also a member of the Albany Police Pipes & Drums, and was a corpsman in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. Predeceased by his parents, James J. and Elizabeth (David) Candlen Sr.; his, brother Robert and his wife Virginia Candlen. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patricia "Patti" (McMahon) Candlen of East Greenbush; a daughter, Laura M. Balogh (Candlen); two sons, Steven F. Candlen and Timothy P. Candlen. Also survived by his grandchildren, Jaimie A. Balogh, Kevin T. Balogh, Maxwell M. Candlen and Adam S. Candlen; two sisters, Marianne (Ralph) Shastany, Joan (Norman) Sontz, and a brother, Thomas P. (Vivian) Candlen, and many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral 9:00 a.m. Saturday, December 27, 2008 at the Rockefeller Funeral Home, 165 Columbia Tpk., Rensselaer, N.Y. and 10:00 a.m. at Historic Church of St. Mary's, Lodge St., Albany, where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be celebrated. Friends may call in the funeral home on Friday from 4-8 p.m. Interment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. The family has requested that those who wish to remember Jim, make memorial contributions to Capital City Rescue Mission, 3 City Square, Albany, NY 12207 or Albany Police Athletic League, Madison Ave. and Ontario St., Albany, NY 12207 in his memory.

U.S. Veteran Russell Robert Lawrence, 62, of Bella Vista, Arkansas died Thursday, January 3, 2008 at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He was born on April 5, 1945 in LeSuer, Minnesota to Michael Lawrence and Frances Krause Lawrence.

He was raised and educated in Minnesota. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Corpsman assigned to the 3rd Marines in the Vietnam Conflict. Russell married Doris Aucone on August 10, 1995 at Apple Valley, Minnesota. He was employed as a Police Officer for the City of Shakopee, Minnesota for 26 years. He retired and moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas in 1998. He loved golfing, fishing, and walking his dog “Halley”. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Michael Lawrence and Henry Lawrence.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Lawrence of Bella Vista, Arkansas; two sons, Chad Lawrence of Mesa, Arizona, Kyle Lawrence of Minneapolis, Minnesota; mother-in-law, Antoinette Aucone of Rogers, Arkansas and one brother, Philip Lawrence of Kansas City, Missouri.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at the Bella Vista Funeral Home Chapel, 2258 Forest Hills Blvd., Bella Vista, Arkansas. Military Honors will be by the V.F.W. #3031 of Rogers, Arkansas.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars #3031, Old Wire Road, Springdale, Arkansas 72762 or to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, Ohio 45250-0301
